I am 13 and have have two panic attacks. i havent gone to the doctor but their is anxiety disorder in my mums past. I had my first panic attack when i had a needle, and the second when i flew off fast scooter. i dont know how to deal with the attacks and my mum dosnt help, all she says is calm down and acts as if im embarrising. i htink she thinks im exagerating over little things. but when it happends its out of my control i cant stop shaking and hyperventilating, my hands freeze up and i had severe tingling in my face and a very pale face.Mum dosnt want to take me to the doctor or buy any medications. i agree with her when she says she dosnt want me on any strong perscribed drugs. she dosnt want to spend lots of money taking me to phyciatrists or phycologists(im not sure which one) but i want to get better. any advice. please give me good answers im realy stressed about it all

I get panic attacks too, I am 22 now but I started getting them when I was 14. I would not recommend medication, I was on medication for awhile when I was 16 and it really messed with my head a lot, it didn’t help that much I still got attacks. I think the best thing is to just learn to manage the attacks. If you start to feel really anxious or feel signs that one might be coming, try to find somewhere to sit down. When I get one I try to get outside where there is fresh air and sit down somewhere private and take deep breaths until it passes. It also helps to drink water. Panic attacks can be scary, but the most important thing to remember is that you CANNOT die from a panic attack and it WILL pass, just keep telling yourself that when you are having one. The worst thing is getting them during school, I used to just go to the bathroom or nurse’s office. You will probably grow out of them eventually, a lot of teenagers get them. Mine have gotten less frequent the past few years, I only get 1 or 2 a year. Oh and be careful if you get older and start to experiment with alcohol, it can trigger attacks in a lot of people including me.

Panic Attacks… Separation Anxiety?

I am 24, and have severe separation anixety when apart from my husband. I have also had panic attacks, since I was a toddler. My husband, in the past has suffered from depression, and went through a time where he would go missing for 24 hours or a couple of days without contacting me. This seemed to trigger this period major anxiety. He has had therapy and is well over his problem. This has gone on for 4 years and has prevented him getting a job because my panic attacks bcame so severe. I didn’t even go to the toilet on my own. It should never have got this far, but it has. I have 2 lovely children, aged 2 and 1. My husband is doing a training course to help get him back into work which is full time. This is the 3rd day and I am totally overwhelmed. I feel like running away. I feel its too much to go from no separation whatsoever to this full time. I wanted to make it work, but I feel like running away. I dont know what to do, I’m ruining everyones lives the way I am
I tried to get therapy but no one would see me with my husband, so I got really stuck. Even now, if I could go, nothing is going to come quick enough and I feel terrified. No one seems to understand, everyone seems to think will power alone will get me through, but I don;t think so. I want to run away
I did try prozac when I was younger, and didn’t really feel the benefits. I use propranolol, which I find really effective, but on the down side I have low blood pressure (around 97/56) so it can make me feel a bit light headed if I take it when its too low

Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. The following steps will eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks and should help alleviate your separation anxiety:

1.Breathe properly – if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and separation anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: ww.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. You can get free downloads online, e.g. http://www.studentservices.utas.edu.au/counselling/audio_resources/index.html

With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). Think think you’ll find CBT a major help. I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!

Panic Attacks!!!??

I get panic attacks at least twice a day! I have been getting them since this summer, after i did something that kind of hurt me…

Soooo could panic attacks be caused by something that happened that scared you or messed you up a bit?

But my panic attacks arent about that…its more about death, sickness, and sometimes can be started just by me hearing a sudden loud noise, or when i feel TIRED!!!!!

I am REALLY scared that this is kinda serious….I feel like i am going crazy or something!!! PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE HELP ME!

Well i used to have panic attacks so i know how you feel. Its like you have some pretty bad anxiety problems. Everyone feels anxious from time to time, like when they have to meet a deadline or deliver a presentation. But for people with GAD, a constant and exaggerated sense of worry interferes with their daily life. People with GAD tend to expect the worst when dealing with issues related to money, health, family, or work, even when there is no sign of trouble. About 5% of people in the U.S. will have GAD at some point during their lifetime. Each year, about 3% of the U.S. adult population has GAD (approximately 6.5 million Americans). Nearly twice as many women as men are affected. People with GAD may experience a few symptoms or may feel overwhelmed by many symptoms. The key signs of GAD are anxiety and worry that are difficult to control and have lasted for at least 6 months. In addition to excessive anxiety and worry, people with GAD have at least 3 of the following symptoms, Restlessness or feeling on edge, Fatigue, Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank, Irritability, Muscle tension ,Difficulty sleeping. Talk to your doctor and he can give you some medicine. Some very common medicines are antidepressents. But beware there can be some bad side affects.

Are these panic attack symptoms – please help?

Hi,

Two days ago, when exercising, there were points where it was hard to catch my breath, where I would have to take deep breaths as if I was yawning.

Two days later, I woke up several times during the night with the same feeling… as if I HAD to keep yawning until I caught my breath. I felt better for a few minutes after I caught my breath, and then the feeling kept on coming back.

Are these symptoms of panic attacks? Any ideas what this can be and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Doesn’t really sound like panic attacks but definitely something you need to see a doctor about.

I had a very bad panic attack about an hour ago. See i have mitral valve prolapse and panic attacks occur in about 90% of people that have this. My heart races all the time and i get out of breath alot. Well i couldn’t get my breathing to slow down and to calm myself down i decided to go for a ride well i got stuck in traffic and started to hyperventilate and i almost parked my car in the middle of an extremely busy highway to find help. I drove far enough to get to where my friend works and when i started talking to her i calmed down a little. But being that my hearts still racing and i’m still out of breath i’m scared that its going to happen again. Any suggestions?

Keep a cell phone handy. From what you said here it seems that you calm down easier when talking to someone. That’s good because it puts your mind in a different direction to focus on something else. Remember panic attacks are all psychological. I would suggest to not put yourself purposefully in the middle of traffic or much less out for a car ride in the middle of an attack. It can lead you to do things that would be very very bad.. especially in the middle of traffic! Put on some music or the tv.. those might help to. :-) Good luck!

The child is 11 and has had panic attacks and is fearfull all the time.He has been on prozac for 2 months with much improvement…this is an inherited condition and he has a stable home with no tramitic experiences in his past.I am concerned of the long term with his condition.
Yes…he is under the care of a psycologist and peditrician
It is sometimes hard to know what the right thing to do is,especially when its your child and you are responsable for them.I have him on meds and I guess I just wanted reassureance that the choice I have made is the right one.For the long term…along with coping skills.I have the same dissorder but do not take meds. But I am 37 and he is only a child who is not able to talk himself out of a situation.Thank you for all the input.

There are a lot of different views on children taking meds for anxiety, depression, attention span disorders; some are negative and some are all FOR a child taking meds to control their disorders. I think it’s up to YOU the parent who has to deal with the child and the issues that accompany their disorder. If you are comfortable with your child taking meds and he/she is improving then I don’t see a problem with that so long as you are made well aware of the possible side effects of the meds on your child. And if the medication is improving their quality of life I don’t see why this would be a "bad" thing. It’s solely up to you. We as parents need to decide what is best for our kids. Don’t let people tell you that what you are doing is wrong or bad. It’s all about what will work for your child for them to have a normal life. That’s what’s important. Take care.
