It sounds like your antidepressant isn’t working. Meanwhile, Klonopin is a depressant. Dump your GP or PCP and see a real psychiatrist. They are medication doctors, not therapists. At this point, you are not an easy case. Not all antidepressants are the same. Different SSRIs affect people differently. There also are SNRIs (hit norepinephrine as well as serotonin), and Wellbutrin which plays with dopamine. Then there are the tricyclics, and if others fail there are the MAOI inhibitors and/or augmenting anti-d’s with Lithium or trying a stabilizer. You have lots of room to maneuver is the point. You also want someone very knowledgeable about which to try next, and that’s the reason for the pdoc.

Also, in case you’ve never heard this before, bipolar type II is misdiagnosed as depression for years, on average 10 to be more specific. The sleeping issues and anxiety plus an anti-d not working *might* indicate that dx, which is another reason to see a pdoc. Last, if that is what you have, you’ve been treating it with the wrong drugs, which is why you want the right dx. Difficult to treat depression is probably your problem, but the other is a possibility. At any rate, you deserve the expert in the field.

    John,

The problem we all have is we see one person in a long white coat (e.g. Doctor) and we think that person is the end all beat all to cure us. And when that one person doesn’t a lot of us give up. Doctors are people just like you and some are great and some just get by. If your current doctor isn’t getting to the bottom of your depression, there are so many alternatives. You need to try another doctor. I would even print out your message here and take it with you. If you have given the meds you are taking now a good try, then it’s time to try something else. But, you need to be actively working hard on this with a doctor that you trust and one that keeps trying different things until you get fixed. And you can get through this. Do not settle for one, two or more failures. Find a doctor that can help you. Ask for recommendations in your local area. Find a medical college close and ask some of the research staff / faculty for recommendations. Good luck and never give up.

I have a list of some things you need to do (in order):
    1) Get ahold of a Bible somehow. It doesn’t matter if you’re religious or not, just get a Bible!
    2) Find a quiet place (a park bench or empty room is nice) where you can be alone for a while.
    3) Even if you don’t believe in a God, pray that He will reveal Himself to you. Tell Him you need help and don’t know what to do. Then by golly, open up that Bible! Start in the New Testament, Psalms, or Proverbs (they’re all great places to start). As you read, if anything stands out to you, pray for God to show you what He wants you to learn from that.
    4) Do this every day. Even if it’s just 15 minutes, go for it!
    5) Get plugged into a Christian church. I go to a Calvary Chapel, and it’s a great God-fearing, truth-teaching church, and there are other Calvaries all over the world.
    6) Don’t lose heart! Jesus understands what you’re going through! He was called a man of sorrows (Isaiah 53), but He was also full of joy, and wants us to be joyful as well! (John 15:11)
The only real way to live is if you are living for Christ, in a loving relationship with your Creator. Without that, you’re not living; you’re just existing. No psychiatrist or therapist in the world can fill the gap in your heart; only Jesus can do that!
    God bless you!

P.S. I’m not saying that following God will be all happy times and big smiles; it’s still hard. But by leaning on Him for support, and trusting in His goodness, you can pull through hard times and be that much stronger because of it.

I am 54 and suffered from panic or anxiety attacks for over 15 years. I know exactly what you are feeling and experiencing. I hate them.
I finally defeated the attacks and have not suffered for about 3 years.
There are a lot of medical treatments. Doctors prescribe Prozac, Xanax, Tranzene, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexpro, and a host of other drugs. I have been on most of them but no longer need the help.
I am grateful to many doctors for their efforts and limited help. Over time, I was seen and/or treated by MDs, DO’s, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Chiropractors, Emergency Room doctors, and even a Chines Acupuncturist. However, I credit myself with beating panic attacks and the doctors with helping me (although some did not help at all). That is a bold statement considering I felt absolutely helpless and defeated through all of the bad years.
I am not a doctor. However, I have researched panic attacks extensively. I have interviewed people who experience them, and have monitored my own progress, noting carefully every single thing in my life, physical condition, activities, diet, mental condition, and much more in order to find the cause and cure. I have some theories that physicians aren’t aware of. They are common sense.

If you are interested, I will share them with you. I don’t know it they’ll work for you but they did for me. The peace I feel when I lay down to sleep is amazing.

    Here is a quick one:

Jump up and down on the bed. Listen to Bluegrass Banjo. Cut it out. You can choose.

Depression is some serious sh*t. Try a little levity once in a while. Whistle. It may not help, but it can’t hurt.

Godspeed, amigo, and remember that touching your toes can make your face turn red. Not to mention the grunting.

P.S. Lay off the drugs. Do it yourself.

Dude, you are fukcing trying and that’s more than a lot of fathers that are "normal". I know dad’s who don’t go to work because they are just plain lazy. All you can do is the best you can do. If you are having a bad day/month/year it’s ok as long as you’re doing the best you can do at that moment.

You can take steps to lessen the chance of attacks and learn to manage them better. Learn to recognize a panic attack. When you sense the first symptoms, know that other symptoms may follow. You have survived them before and can do so again. Try slow, deep breaths.

    * Take your time. It’s important not to hope for a quick cure. Therapy takes time, and improvement comes in small steps.
    * Go easy on yourself. People who feel panic tend to be overly critical of themselves.
    * Learn to lower your level of everyday anxiety through a variety of techniques, including meditation and exercise.
    * Avoid stimulants, such as nicotine and caffeine, which can be found not only in coffee, but many teas, colas and chocolate.

Try to increase your will-power. Follow the instructions given bellow :

Depression, Tension & Increase of will-power.

Increasing the will-power : Our mind has a great effect on these glands. For example, continuous fear damages the Pituitary gland and makes one timid. Similarly, tension and worry disturb the Pineal gland and so leads to high B.P. and as Pineal gland controls other glands it also disturbs other glands and digestive system. In modern times, strees-tension or worry-fear have increased and they often disturb these endocrine glands. If these endocrine glands are not treated immediately, it might lead to malfunctioning of other glands of the body. As these glands are interrelated, whenever one gland is disturbed, the other glands also get disturbed. So, when you press on the points of these endocrine glands you will feel pain on points of more than one gland especially in case of chronic diseases. Therefore, it is very improtant to give Acupressure treatment on all the endocrine glands and keep them under proper control.

These glands also control the mind (the will-power). So in order to get rid of bad habits like smoking, drinking, drug addiction or even overeating, it is extremely necessary to give treatment on all endocrine glands for at least, fifteen days. Because, these people lack the necessary will-power to give up bad habits, they often break their vows to stop such bad habits and so they are considered unreliable. However, a treatment of fifteen days will give them necessary will-power to stop these bad habits after that. And they will be free from the withdrawal symptoms of stopping these bad habits.

Nervous tension : In the modern days because of fast life and loss of contentment, nervous tension keeps on building up increasingly, tending to damage our mind and health.

How to find out : Ask the patient to lie down on the back and ask some one to press on the base of the middle toe in both the legs. If there is a hurting sensation,it means nervous tension. If the hurting is unbearable, it means that the person is on the verge of collapse and needs immediate attention.

C U R E : (1) While the patient is lying on the back, bend all the toes of both legs, backward. It may hurt but give little more pressure and bend them as much as possible. Repeat this three times a day till the tension is removed.

    (2) Clasp your hands tightly interlocking the fingers. Then with left hand fingers press on the back of the right hand and then with right hand fingers, press on the back of the left hand. repeat for about 1 to 2 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day.

    (3) Insomnia : The above mentioned treatment can be taken for 5 to 12 minutes at night in bed to ensure good sleep and cure insomnia.

    (4) Take 2 glasess of gold/cilver/copper charged water reduced from 8 glasses of water daily.

    (5) Kali Phos 1 m (a Biochemic medicine) : Take 8 pills in the eveining between 8 to 9 p.m. for 10 days, then once a week. After 10 days Kali Phos 12 x 4+4 pills every day. Complete course is of 45 days.

I used to suffer from depression when I was going through my children custody battle. It was one of my worst nightmares!
I went to the doctor and told her I was always crying, she immediately prescribed some xanax, guess what?…I felt even worse!. I only took it for 3 weeks and never noticed any changes, but to feel suicidal and neglected. I stopped taking them and decided to turn my life around without the use of medications, I searched for faith. I also looked for other natural alternatives such homeopathic and herbs. Since then I have NEVER felt depress in my life. Now I laughed at life and it has made me a better person and a mother!. I have helped a few of my friends, and they have thanked me for changing their life around as well. I want you to look into what you are taking, I want you to investigate why and how you became depress and what caused it in the first place. The reason I am telling you this is because I had to search for my own self, once I found out what triggered my depression and anxieties everything started to disintegrate and solved by itself. See, when I was a child I suffer from all sorts of abused, I was in the middle of a war zone back in my native country and at home wasn’t all "peachy", my dad was an alcoholic and physically abusive to my mother and we watched everything, he nearly killed her!. I could go on and on enough to make you depress, but anybody going through the stuff I went through would have ended in the nut house!. I know you can do this, if I did it, anybody can, you just have to try harder!.

Chemicals imbalances in the brain can also be either the cause or effect of depression. Dopamine is the chemical that produces anxiety, stress, nervousness, and aggression. When the level of dopamine is ELEVATED, a person may develop feelings of insecurity, paranoia, and fear. Serotonin is another important chemical in the brain that can affect a person’s mental well-being.
A person with LOW serotonin levels displays mood swings, and some sort of compulsion, such as alcoholism, overeating, or being a workaholic, perfectionist, or procrastinator.

Best ways to beat depression is Diet, Exercise, Supplements or Therapy.

Its essential to get the B-complex vitamins, since they work together to balance proper brain functioning.
    Fatty acids, such Omega-6, Omega-3.
    Magnesium and herbal extracts such:
St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum in Latin) is a long-living plant with yellow flowers. It contains many chemical compounds.

Try to get off the meds. Eat healthy, take daily multi-vitamin (Solgar is great, sold at health food stores). Try some daily exercise. And, remember this:
Think beyond your present dreams, to the dreams you will have once they’ve already come true.

And when you can clearly see that life and those dreams in your mind’s eye; how confident you will walk and how proud you will feel–Start walking and feeling like that today.

Thoughts become things….choose the good ones!
